How to install Twitter Gadget inside GMail?

Installing TwitterGadget inside GMail is quite simple. Just follow the steps mentioned below.

1) Navigate to the 'Settings' section on Gmail and press 'Labs' tab!

2) Enable "Add any gadget by URL". This is a really useful tool which enables the user to add external gadgets to their GMail account similar to iGoogle.

3) Press the 'Gadgets' tab and enter the following URL in 'Add any gadget by its URL'.

4) You are done. The Twittergadget appears at the lower left corner of your GMail window below the chat section.

The gadget may appear too small at the beginning and you may even start doubting whether you can properly tweet from it. But, there are an awesome lot of functionalities you may not even imagine. The 'Advanced Section' shows that you can almost modify everything in the gadget. The user can choose a variety of themes for the gadget or one can even choose to bring in his/her own Twitter.com profile colours here. The height of the gadget can be increased.

Keyboard shortcuts can be enabled/disabled. I find this shortcuts to be another awesome functionality in this gadget. Listing down the few basic shortcuts for easy tweeting:

Lily's Twitter Spellcheck Bot - Check spelling while tweeting on mobile phone

Lily is a Firefox add-on that allows users to create rich, complex applications in a web browser. With Lily it's possible to make programs that mashup the web or the desktop, visualize and animate data, modify webpages, play music, or connect to world outside the computer. Lily programs can be shared with other Lily users as text files or run by anyone as Firefox add-ons or standalone XULRunner applications. Lily runs on Mac, Windows or Linux, just like Firefox.

Twitter SpellCheck lets you check the spelling of a word from your cellphone. It uses the Twitter API to send and recieve messages from the cellphone and the Yahoo suggested Spelling service to look up the spelling. Two seperate Twitter accounts are required - one for Lily and the other one for yourself. You'll also need to enable your cellphone in the Twitter account settings. In the patch you'll need to add your Twitter user/pass as an argument to the twitter object. The new twitter object implements most of the api methods, including the direct message feature which I'm using in this patch. The code also includes an example of doing basic auth with xmlhttp. Twittermail is a really useful service which helps the user to post to Twitter by sending an email. Login is using Twitter user ID and password. Once the user has logged into Twitter, they are supplied with a specific Twittermail email address. The Twittermail email id is unique for each and every user, hence it must be kept confidential.

Post to Twitter:

Send a message to your secret Twittermail id, which will be posted as a tweet in your timeline. Leave the subject line empty for a normal message.

Twitsay allows you to leave a voice message on your Twitter account. All the user has to do is to call up a regional Twitsay number and leave a message. The account will be immediately forwarded and posted on the user's Twitter timeline. Initially, the service had regional numbers for Germany and Austria only. At present, numbers from Switzerland, UK, Paris and New York have also been added. Numbers from Japan and from the San Francisco Bay area are on the next list. Users from other places have to wait for a while to make use of this service.

The user need not worry about cost, because the cost equals that of a local phone call depending on the dialing plan. SnapTweet - Share Flickr Pictures on Twitter

SnapTweet is an easy to use service which makes it simple to post the user's latest Flickr photos to their Twitter stream.

SnapTweet allows the users to post their Flickr photos in a very simple way. The user has to send a direct message to @snaptweet, which grabs the link to the user's most recent public Flickr upload and sends a Twitter update with the text from user's direct message, with the link to the image appended.

SnapTweet also offers an auto-post feature. It allows the users to set up a special tag for this feature in their SnapTweet profile. The users should tag the photos with that special auto-post tag for auto-posting them. Also, for the users who would like their every emailed Flickr image to post to their Twitter stream, they can setup a default tag in Flickr that matches their SnapTweet auto-post tag.

There is a drawback to using tags - Timing. SnapTweet doesn’t do well in a real-time posting environment. A Twitter update is sent when synchronization between SnapTweet and Flickr occurs. This gets confusing, and it’s never fun to wonder when the user's tweet will post. It is recommended for the Flickr lover who prefers spending time in Flickr over Twitter.

What if instead of TELLING people what you are doing, you could SHOW them? Now, it is possible with Twiddeo. Twiddeo allows users to upload - via web or mobile (email) - videos and aggregate those videos into Twitter, the same way a standard Twitter update happens.

Twiddeo is a mash-up between Twitter API and vSocial's Social Media API. To use the Twiddeo service users authenticate with their Twitter username and password to enable web uploads and to generate a unique email address to send videos from their mobile device. It also allows users to directly record the video using their web cam.

The users can view the videos in Twitter site itself by using Twiddeo Greasemonkey script in Firefox. Twiddeo also displays the recent public videos uploaded by the users. YouTwit presents the last status update a particular user has made along with the location from where the update has been made with the help of Google Maps API. YouTwit is a mashup with Google Maps.

The user is a presented with the map containing the latest status update a particular person has made with their location in any part of the earth. Also, the latest tweets are also presented before you if the particular user is tweeting at that time. The site asks for your Twitter username and password before letting you to view the tweets. If you dont enter the above requisites, you are just presented with the Google Map.

I noticed this : I entered the username of Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk). But the map showed the tweets of different people along with their location from their respective parts of the world which seems similar to Twittervision which we discussed earlier. Then, I tried again with Smashing Magazine's (@smashingmag). I got the same result.

Twittervision follows the same concept as Twittearth, which helps in mapping live tweets from all over the world. Twittervision is a mashup with Google Maps API. Live tweets from all over the world are shown in the map.

To begin with, the user need not do much. Once he enters the site, the map shows up and live tweets from all over the world at the particular time are also shown. The user can also choose the tweets to be in a multitude of languages which ranges from Albanian, Arabic, Bulgarian to Turkish, Ukranian and Vietnamese. A total of 42 languages are left to the users choice to choose from.

With millions and millions of people tweeting everyday and with thousands of tweets per minute, its very hard to locate and identify popular keywords in Twitter. TweetVolume is a really useful service which really solves the problem in this niche. TweetVolume is a service powered by Wowza and it makes use of Google and Twitter APIs.

The interface is really simple, yet powerful. Easy to manage and use. All the user has to do is enter the keywords in the textboxes provided and BAM! the user will be provided with a bar-graph which indicates the number of times the search term has been used. Multiple keywords can be compared side by side. A really useful tool for tracking down events, or to compare your popularity with anyone else. (Dont compare it with celebrities, you will be thoroughly disappointed! :P)

I had the urge to compare the bigwigs in different arenas - Google, Mashable, Twitter, Facebook & Apple. And, pretty stunning - the result was expected. Twitter leads the list and it wins by a pretty huge, huge margin.

Twitter Charts is a Yahoo Pipes/Google Charts mashup. Twitter Charts graphs any users tweets based on a timeline that includes days of the week and by the hour. Twitter Charts is a really great way to check out how much active any user is on Twitter. Also, the engagement of the user with other users can also be found out by checking the chart, because it also reveals the portions of the tweets which are replies.

The Twitter user's tweets are gathered via Yahoo Pipes! and rendered using the Google Chart API. Check out the chart of Ashton Kutcher, the actor with the more number of followers:

The most interesting aspect of this project is that, other than the static files being served up by xefer.com itself, no other server-side processing is being done here; all the processing is being handled by Yahoo Pipes and Google, and of course Twitter itself which is ultimately hosting the raw data.

At the beginning when you enter a new user name, you can find the time taken by the chart to show up is really slow. But once done, you can find the subsequent runs to be faster because of Yahoo!'s caching of the generated output. Twitku is a web service that lets the user to check out the posts on Twitter and Jaiku simulataneously. Also, the user can post on Twitter or Jaiku or both from Twitku itself. Twitku can be partially compared to Meebo.

The public timeline from both Twitter and Jaiku are presented before the user. Also, a small "Post Message" window at the side, lets the user to post on Twitter and Jaiku by checking on the checkbox. Twitku is useful for users who use both Twitter and Jaiku frequently. The interface is very simple. The API's of both Twitter and Jaiku are responsible for making this service possible.

Before posting or checking out their status, the user is requested to login to Twitter with their Twitter username and password. While posting into Jaiku, the user is asked to login using Jaiku username and Jaiku API Key. Auto-refreshing of the public timelines of both Twitter and Jaiku take place every 300 seconds.

Once logged in, the user can view their private Twitter feeds and replies to them. And, in case of Jaiku, the user can view either their private feeds and public feeds. The user can also change the default arrangement of Twitter and Jaiku timelines according to their wish.

Steps to be followed :

Follow gcal in Twitter. (gcal is a bot that processes and forwards messages to your Google calendar)
Grant access to your Google calendar account from Twitter.
Events can now be added to your Google calendar by sending a direct message to gcal followed by your event.

TwitterSnooze - Temporarily suspend your verbose friends

Definitely your friends are not spammers, but when you are in a particular situation where you need to shut up your verbose friends for a while - user TwitterSnooze.

Why TwitterSnooze?

It's a good tool to avoid a blast of tweets from a conference you are not attending... just snooze the conference goers for a few days.
It's a nice way to get back at someone for saying something stupid... give them the silent treatment ;)
It's a good way to ignore someone that just flooded your timeline for no good reason... but it was just a one-time offense and doesn't merit permanent unfollowing.

So, its very much simple. Login to TwitterSnooze with your Twitter username and password, also mention the user who you want to snooze. Mention the time period for which you need to snooze the particular user which can vary from 1-30 days. But, a slight disadvantage is that the particular user whom you are snoozing will be updated with an email stating they have been unfollowed. Anyways, you can remedy the situation by checking on an option which allows you to inform in your timeline, that the particular user is just been snoozed and not totally unfollowed. The user will be automatically followed back, once the particular time-period for snoozing is over.

With the overabundance of followers and their tweets, its highly possible that you miss the tweets of your near and dear ones. I have been experiencing this for quite a while. And, then I heard of CrowdStatus. Now, this new tool helps the user to create group pages to see what your friends, colleagues, family members etc. are upto.

Crowdstatus is made up of crowds, each crowd contains people and each person in the crowd has a status. This means that you can see what everyones current status is in a crowd. Think of crowdstatus as a twitter group.

CrowdStatus is very much in the beginning stage now. The site states that, they are definitely in Alpha. At present, the site works only with Twitter and you can add people to your crowd only if they have a Twitter account. CrowdStatus is created by Darren Stuart. He has stated that this is a personal project till now and not to ask about any business models. (Hence an inference can be made, that the project is very much in the beginning stage and more updates can be expected in the near future.) Users can also request features to be added to the site.

Twuffer allows the user to compose tweets which can be used in the future. I love the tag of Twuffer - "OMG! It's a Twitter buffer"! Nice, isnt it?

Twuffer was designed by Grady Britton. Twuffer is for the user who has a need to schedule pre-written and postdated tweets. It enables the user to post their tweets but does not want it to be online on Twitter until some point in time. Cant get it yet? Consider you are a very busy business man and you are flying from one time zone to the other but in the midtime there is a product launch that takes place somewhere else. (Ofcourse, which does not need your presence! ;o) ) You need not be awake throughout your flight to inform your followers of your product launch. Post your tweet in advance on Twuffer. TwitPic allows the user to share pictures and photos on Twitter. Flickr is to the web what TwitPic is to Twitter.

No separate signup is required for logging into TwitPic. If you have a Twitter account then you already have a TwitPic account. You can log into TwitPic with your Twitter username and password absolutely with no difficulties. Clicking on the Home link on top of the page will take it to your photostream. You may either upload photos or delete photos. Clicking on the trash icon next to the photo will delete the photo. TwitPic was started in early 2008 by Noah Everett.

Steps:

Choose an image to upload. Only GIF, JPG and PNG images are allowed.
Enter information about the image such as where the photo was taken. The pictures are shown in the Google map in the homepage of TwitPic if you have enabled public visibility on Twitter.
Tags can also be added to the picture.
Add a message to be posted along with the picture in Twitter.
Users can also choose to just upload the pictures in TwitPic and not post in Twitter.

Wefollow displays the Top 10 Twitter users overall on the homepage.

To add yourself, send a Twitter reply to WeFollow. The Twitter reply should contain the categories you wish to be listed under. The user can be listed only under three categories. Each category name should be preceded by a '#' sign.

For example,
@wefollow #socialmedia #entrepreneur #celebrity

The above query will list you under the Social Media, Entrepreneur and Celebrity category. The user can name any category he/she wishes. Anything will be made a category once someone assign themselves to it. Depending upon the number of followers, your ranking in the particular category begins to grow. Wefollow succeeds by differentiating people into different categories thus making the users to easily identify people with their taste.

Twitterment is a mashup which allows the user to find statistics on what people are tweeting about. Twitterment also allows the user to search for specific words just like Twitterverse. Thus, Twitterment acts as a buzz-tracking system. The search in Twitterment is powered by Google.

The following features have been removed by Twitterment. But, anyways. Twitterment also provided a line graph pertaining to the number of times the keyword appeared in that day and also provided a bar graph pertaining to the number of times the keyword appeared in that particular week. Twitterment also made use of Google Maps to show from where the tweets are originating. Two words can be entered side by side and they can be compared according to their daily/hourly trends. Unfortunately, these facilities are removed by Twitterment.

Tweet Scan is a Twitter-based search engine. Tweet Scan lets the user search the Twitter's public timeline for snippets of text (also, called keywords) queried by the user. Tweet Scan also provides you an easy way to network with people who share your interests.

SimplyTweet is a Twitter application for iPhone and iPod Touch.

SimplyTweet notifies you via a push notification for incoming @ replies and direct messages. The application checks for @ replies and direct messages once every 5-10 minutes. The reason behind this time delay is - Twitter applications are limited to only 100 queries with the Twitter servers per hour. If you get a ton of @ replies in that hour and have them all pushed to your phone as soon as they come in you might use up that 100 number fairly quick.

Simply Tweet comes up with nice features such as the ability to store your drafts of tweets, search photos, the ability to browse conversations and multiple account support.

Twistori is the first step in an ongoing social experiment based on Twitter. Twistori pulls tweets from Twitter based on specific keywords such as I hate, I love, I think, I believe, I wish and I feel. It then updates all the tweets in a non-stop flurry of tweets in its webpage. Twistori is nothing but an overflow of people's emotions from all over the world.

The second step of this social experiment is unknown. But, the founders say that this project is inspired from We Feel Fine, which aggregates feelings from a large number of social sites and blogs. We Feel Fine draws some interesting broad conclusions based on the feelings it gathers. Twistori is accumulating praises day by day because of its unique nature of gathering feelings from all over the world.

Twubble uses Twitter API to search through your friends list and suggest you with some more people to follow. The algorithm is simple. Twubble combs through your friends list and suggests users to you with a lot of followers who are not already in your follow list. Twubble is a simlar mashup like Twittervision and Twitterspy.

I wrote Twubble in a couple nights of hacking in bed after the kid went to sleep. I used the latest Google Web Toolkit milestone which supports Java 5 (flawlessly from my experience). I was writing Javascript code (server and client side) for years before I ever got into Java, but I have to say, you’d be crazy to write AJAX apps any other way than GWT nowadays.

"Twitter is a free social-networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read each others' updates, known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters, displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to other users - known as followers - who have subscribed to them." - Wikipedia.

Twitter began operations in 2006. The service is like a short message service over the web, which allows users to keep friends and family in the loop. A customizable page is displayed after sign up. Users can post to this page from their mobile phone, the internet or by using any of the myriad tools available for this purpose. This helps the users to connect even when they are on their move.

A twitter post is called a tweet.

A twitter user is called a tweeple.

And the sum of tweeples and tweets constitute the tweetosphere.

Simply explained, there are two kinds of people in Twitter - the follower and the followed. The follower (say, Adam) is a person who follows some other person (say, Eve). When Eve posts something on Twitter, Adam will be immediately intimated what Eve is upto. Eve can post her tweets either publicly - will be intimated to every other follower of Eve or only to Adam. When Eve wants something that only Adam must know, she can use a '@' before Adam's profile name thus intimating Adam of her post. For example, if Eve posts, @Adam Ready for a movie tonight?. Only Adam recieves this tweet and none other.

Twitter can also be used as a communication platform for individuals and their personal social networks. This form of usage can be referred to as ambient intimacy.

Ambient intimacy is about being able to keep in touch with people with a level of regularity and intimacy that you wouldn’t usually have access to, because time and space conspire to make it impossible.

Twitter is an efficient branding and social media tool. Many businesses are finding Twitter a powerful platform for interacting with their customers. Twitter can be used for personal branding, getting feedback on products, hiring people, getting direct traffic to your websites or even reading news. His favourite bands are Linkin Park and Backstreet Boys. He has been a follower of Indian Cricket all through his life though he has never been in a team himself. His favourite team in the English Premier League is Manchester United. He also follows the F1 races now and then.

Silambarasan aka ‘Simbu’ finished his Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication from Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore, India. He is interested in Software Programming, Programmable Circuits and Web-Development. He spends most of his time online - downloading the latest songs/movies, playing online games and searching for new trends in Technology. He likes music and listens to a plethora of songs. He is an avid follower of hardcore Rock/Rap. But he loves soft melodies too. He's interested in pursuing his higher studies in management and someday, he wants to become an entrepreneur if everything clicks in his life.
